4 Special Awards (Most Beautiful, Impressive Individual, Outstanding Studio, and Rising Star) are selected from shortlisted submissions by our panel of judges, while the Community Vote award is voted by the public from the pool of shortlisted submissions. Special Awards winners will receive a cash prize of $1000 USD, and the overall winner for “Most Beautiful” wins $5000 USD.

To recognize a larger range of contributions to our field and community, we have introduced three new Special Awards: Impactful Community Leader, Exemplary Book, and Test of Time. These awards are nominated by the public, and are open today  until Oct 15 (Sat), 23:59 PT. See more info below and on our website about the process and eligibility for nominations of these three Special Awards.

Celebrate your colleagues, friends, and mentors by nominating them or their work!

About nominations

  • Can I self nominate? Yes!
  • Is there a submission fee? No.
  • Where is the nomination form? Nominations can be submitted through a Google Form on the DVS website
  • Do I need to inform the nominee that I am nominating them? If you personally know your nominee, we encourage you to obtain their consent in being considered for the Awards. Otherwise, we will contact the nominee directly as much as possible.

Impactful Community Leader

The Impactful Community Leader award recognizes an individual who has made a significant mark on the data visualization industry and community at large, with an emphasis on contributions made to the field from 2019-2022.

Exemplary Book

The Exemplary Book Award is designed to recognize a critical piece of long format writing published in the eligibility period (2019 - 2022), with the definition of ‘book’ being left quite wide. A book, for the purpose of this Award, may be a formally published manuscript (with a publisher or self-published), an eBook, a coffee table/art book, a comic, or any other text-based long form publication that features data visualization prominently.

Test of Time

The Test of Time award is inspired by the IEEE Vis Test of Time award presented to a paper published ten years prior with lasting impact on the field of data visualization. There are no media limitations as to what can qualify for the test of time as long as it has a proven connection to and impact on the field of data visualization. The one constraint is that the item itself must be a piece of work (not an individual), but must have a clear person or persons who can be named as the originators of the work for the purpose of recognizing the original creators.

Examples of types of works that one could nominate for the award: new chart type or design approach, visualization library, visualization tool (digital/tech or analog), academic paper, book, other article, project/visualization, and a number of other types.
