Photovisualization | A personal exploration and the use of photovisualization as a technique to humanize data by Christopher Hayes

PHOTOVISUALIZATION, a personal exploration and explanatory presentation of photovisualization as a technique to humanize data. Ultimately answer, is Photovisualization, part of Data Visualization?

The product contains hundreds of self-curated photovisualization photographs, including thorough background (descriptions, diagrams, taxonomy, and applicability), and uses personal case examples across three photovisualization techniques: Snapshot, Exposure, and Post Processing. Each page is cleverly constructed to present a solid visual hierarchy, with linked interactivity components to aid the viewer in understanding the content and offer another data visualization approach to tell a compelling story to develop an emotional response and connection.

This product demonstrates to the data visualization designer to think about data visualization beyond a chart that preserves the numbers it represents. Still, suggesting photographs too could be used as an optical technique to reveal a complex phenomenon, abstract rather than intuitive. In the end, If data visualization is about telling stories, then photovisualization is another practical way to tell a compelling story to develop an emotional response that humanizes data.

Through my explanation, use of case illustrations of photoviz techniques and styles, and digital photobook prototype, I hope to provide a glimpse into photovisualization and expand your perspective on data visualization.
