‘When the tide turns…the slick will come’ by Almeida Studio
The imminent drilling of a well by Brazilian oil giant Petrobras in the Foz do Amazonas region is a foreseeable catastrophe which will test President Lula’s commitment to the environment.
To tell this story, the Sumaúma team, a publication based in the brazilian Amazon, investigated what's behind these public policies and I, as a freelance data designer, mapped and charted the possibly affected areas.
With a blend of QGIS, Photoshop, R for data wrangling and even a bit of AI to generate a coral reef texture for some of the symbology, I produced these series of maps which were republished and shared by many different environmental communicators and organizations.
