UNFPA “State of World Population 2023” interactive dashboard by Marc Reid

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) recently released their “State of World Population 2023” report. This report, produced by a group of external advisers, researchers and writers, working alongside UNFPA technical staff and editors, “explores how broadening our understanding of population can lead to new solutions that build demographic resilience and help shape a more equitable and prosperous future.”

My goal with this project was to transform the multiple pages of data tables towards the end of the report and make it easier for a general consumer to explore the multifaceted data and find their own stories and insights contained within it.

Geographical data was combined with other UN country-to-region mappings to enable regions to be consistent throughout the dashboard and contain all 204 countries, territories and other areas contained within the reports data tables.

Data across three broad categories are included in the report:

1. Sexual and reproductive health
2. Gender, rights and human capital
3. Demographic indicators

Interactivity in the dashboard enables any of the 38 metrics to be explored, to see correlations with other metrics, analyse distributions of countries by a chosen metric and to easily highlight a specific country or region within the data across all charts in the dashboard.
