India in Cyclones by NID
Here’s a reframed version of your narrative:
This data narrative project examines the rising temperatures, the formation of cyclones, and the devastation they cause along India’s coasts. It invites viewers to reflect on the increasing risks posed by climate change to India’s coastline.
With a vast coastline stretching 7,517 km, India is exposed to nearly 10% of the world’s tropical cyclones. While cyclones impact the entire coast, the eastern coast is significantly more vulnerable compared to the western coast.
According to the 2022 Global Climate Report by the National Centers for Environmental Information (NOAA), every month of 2022 ranked among the ten warmest months on record for its respective month. Furthermore, there is a 98% likelihood that the next five years will be the warmest period ever recorded.
Through this data visualization, I have analyzed cyclones impacting India’s east and west coasts over the past 23 years (2000–2023), highlighting the alarming increase in their intensity, destruction, and severity. By correlating this data, the project underscores the pressing threat of climate change and the potential for even more devastating outcomes in the future.
