Ukraine Regional Response: Needs, Intentions, and Border Crossings Dashboard by Revisual Labs
We faced an interesting challenge: how do you visualise survey data about 30,000+ people moving in and out of Ukraine during a crisis to help inform humanitarian aid? Working with IOM, UN Migration, we built a dashboard that does exactly that.
At its core, the dashboard we built helps people who make critical decisions about policy and aid for Ukrainians impacted by the 2022 invasion. Policymakers, humanitarian aid workers, and migration officers can dive into 86+ interactive charts to explore trends with ease, and filter down to demographics they care about and bookmark charts for comparison or analysis in a dedicated view. Moreover, users can also generate custom print-ready reports from the charts they bookmarked, eliminating the need for manual collation.
Our design process involved extensively performing research to understand the client’s needs, running an audit of the existing dashboards, defining the ideal information architecture, data visualisation and chart design, finally bookended by UI design.
Development was meticulously planned and executed in stages–laying a strong foundation before integrating new sections and components, setting up a system that fostered teamwork, allowing team members focused on data visualisation and create charts independently without impacting the rest of the dashboard, and collaboratively problem-solving to implement advanced features such as bookmarking and exporting charts as custom PDFs.
The end result is something we're proud of, not just because of the technical achievement (though 1,151 Asana tasks and tens of thousands of lines of code later, it's definitely that too), but because it can help decision makers understand and respond to the needs of people displaced by the Ukraine crisis. The dashboard was also built to evolve with time, allowing the client organisation to easily update with future survey data.
